SUMMARY:Them Coulee Boys
DESCRIPTION:Back by Popular Demand: The Bend welcomes Them Coulee Boys back to our historic stage!\nThem Coulee Boys craft a brand of Americana that blends folk\, punk\, bluegrass\, and rock & roll. They sing their conversational songs in 4 part harmony\, often with a banjo stomp and rhythm section punch that drives the audience onto the dance floor and into community. Their trusty van has propelled them thousands of miles across the country and into the hearts of strangers\, who tend to leave each show as family. \nSoren Staff and Beau Janke—co-founders of folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys—met as counselors at a bible camp in northern Wisconsin in 2011. Having both grown up amidst a stretch of glacial melt-carved river valleys in the upper Midwest\, otherwise known by French fur trappers as coulees\, they became fast friends. Camp counselors actually coined the name “them coulee boys” as a way to refer to the constant companions\, more often than not with instruments in hand. Soren’s little brother\, Jens\, joined the crew on mandolin at camp in 2012\, and since\, both Neil Krause on bass and Staš Hable on drums have helped to grow the band into the rollicking outfit it is today. \n“from pure and genuine ballads to a leaping\, countrified take on rock and roll” 2021 marks the release of their fourth record\, Namesake\, a ten-song collection that spans from pure and genuine ballads to a leaping\, countrified take on rock and roll. Singles from the recording have premiered via The Bluegrass Situation\, Ditty TV\, and Live for Live. Twangville readers dubbed the record “Best New Release”. \nNamesake was recorded at The Hive in the band’s hometown of Eau Claire\, WI. The album was produced by Grammy-winner Brian Joseph who has worked with the likes of Paul Simon\, Sufjan Stevens\, Ani Difranco\, and The Indigo Girls\, and earned his Grammy producing and engineering Bon Iver’s Bon Iver. Taking inspiration from the intimate nature of The Hive after a long period of quarantine\, Namesake feels familiar—like old friends with no need for small talk. There are moments of power and punch\, balanced with intimacy only felt between the ones we love. \nNamesake finds Them Coulee Boys following a new trajectory\, combining their signature take on folk-grass and Americana with comfort on electric instruments and playing rock and roll. The record lives and breathes. It’s both intimate and bombastic. It’s the sweet aunt who makes delicious pies and the wiley uncle who’s not afraid to hit a bit of the hooch. At the bottom is the acceptance that comes with family and old friends; none of us are perfect\, but there’s enough love out there to make up for it. \nMore About Them Coulee Boys: \nWith four full-length albums and an EP behind them\, including 2019’s Die Happy (produced by Trampled By Turtles’ Dave Simonett on Lo-HiRecords) and 2021’s Namesake (produced by Grammy winner Brian Joseph)\, the band has garnered international attention and earned press in American Songwriter\, Ditty TV\, Folk Alley\, and The Bluegrass Situation\, as well as tours with Trampled By Turtles and a spot on the songwriter’s Cayamo Cruise. In 2020\, they were named Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Band to Watch. In 2021\, they won Bluegrass/Americana Band of the Year by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry. \nFor all things Them Coulee Boys\, please visit themcouleeboys.com. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM to give you time to find your seats\, visit our historic lobby\, concession stand and fully stocked bar! Show begins at approximately 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Maddie Poppe ft. special guest Genevieve Heyward
DESCRIPTION:The Bend Welcomes American Idol Winner Maddie Poppe\nft. special guest Genevieve Heyward\nUnless you’ve experienced it firsthand\, there’s no way to understand just how dramatically instant fame can mess with your head. Maddie Poppe went through all kinds of emotions — from elation to self-doubt — after winning American Idol in 2018\, releasing her debut album Whirlwind the following year\, and then ultimately watching in amazement as many of the people in her creative orbit dropped away.  Despite the momentum from a pair of hit singles\, “Made You Miss” and “Not Losing You\,” Maddie found herself alone\, and her future as an artist uncertain. \n“There were so many times I felt I had the rug pulled out from under me. Like the minute any momentum had built up\, it came crumbling back down. From losing team members to seeing\ncrucial opportunities fall through\, I found myself feeling so helpless and thinking\, ‘How am I going to do this on my own?’ It felt like I was standing at the bottom of a mountain I was too afraid to climb\,” Maddie says. “It took some time\, but I finally realized I didn’t have a choice\, my fate was in my own hands. I had to face my fears\, rise above. \nThe Iowa native\, who captured the attention of fans with her folksy singer-songwriter style\, did exactly that by giving herself the grace to evolve. While Maddie\, now 24\, can still very much\nbowl over a crowd with only her honeyed voice and acoustic guitar\, she’s upped her game by tapping into a modern sound that blends R&B\, pop\, and Americana\, and by committing herself to writing her own songs.  On her irresistible new single “One That Got Away\,” Maddie writes about the dissolution of a friend’s longtime relationship\, predicting that the guy who foolishly dumped her will realize he threw away something great. But the song — a soulful jam with shades of Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 — can also be seen as a commentary on Maddie’s own experience in the music industry. \n                                                                                                                                                                                                 \nSince she can remember\, Wisconsin based singer-songwriter Genevieve Heyward has grown up with music in her life. Adept at both guitar and piano\, she writes her songs based on raw emotion and relatable experiences that cuts through with melody and sultry tone. Straight out of school\, she dove head first into music: touring nationally and internationally\, either by herself\, with her band\, or with other well renowned artists. She has released numerous records throughout her career and doesn’t plan on stopping. Her music has hints of indie folk\, bedroom pop and indie piano pop\, all tied in with her own spin and topped off with a unique and rich voice. Her songs and performing style incorporates humor and connection\, making the audience feel heard and immersed. \nAfter releasing her first album before graduating high school\, “It’s Not Like Anyone’s Listening”\, she went on to tour through the United States by herself or with other artists. She then released her second Ep\, “The River” in 2019 at Painted Recordings. While recording and writing\, she toured across the United States in Tennessee\, California\, Texas\, Vermont\, and eventually headed overseas where she did her first headlining European tour through Norway accompanied by a band. After returning she released her latest album\, “The Norway EP”\, which she had the opportunity to record in Scandinavia. Now she is currently working on her next project and planning on getting back to the road. \n                                                                                                                                                                                                 \nDoors open at 6:30 PM to give you time to find your seats\, visit our historic lobby\, concession stand and fully stocked bar! \nShow begins at approximately 7:30 PM

The band broke away from their demanding schedule to record a self-titled disc of self-penned material. “We’ve been incorporating originals into the sets for sometime now and been getting great response\,” says drummer Tim Schulz. Their own songs stay true to the roots of their covers. The musicianship is top-notch\, and although the production level is high\, an undeniable looseness keeps the record accessible to those who enjoy the Allman Brothers-like feel that has made the band so popular. Most bands in this area of music never make it past their first never-ending gigtuned-jam\, but Southbound has stood the test of time\, evolving and remaining fresh\, maintaining their following\, and drawing in new fans show after show. \nThe Onion \nSouthbound is like the house band for the entire city of Milwaukee\, playing practically every week at bars\, clubs\, and festivals\, as well as traveling throughout the state. Though the group packs its sets with crowd-pleasing covers\, Southbound recorded a CD of original compositions. So\, in addition to works by the Allman Brothers (whose “Southbound” inspired this band’s name)\, the Grateful Dead\, and the Rolling Stones\, fans can now shout for Southbound’s own material… \nOn Milwaukee.com \nSouthbound fans range from hippies to rockers and everyone in between. The band recorded their first album\, self-title “Southbound”. The record is a kaleidoscope of styles\, from the danceable\, Grateful-Deady “Latent Heat” to the soulful\, mellow “Plea.” Southbound doesn’t reinvent the wheel\, rather the band creates songs that their favorite artists might have written themselves. It’s almost as if they are channeling the sounds of classic rock bands\, and\, lucky for our ears\, doing it quite well… \nMilwaukee Magazine Run For Cover \nThe knock on “cover bands” – groups that play songs written by others – is that lack of original material (whatever that means) automatically assigns them second-class status. The sentiment ignores the fact that much of today’s “post modern\,” “Information Age” music – sample[1]based electronic and hip-hop\, for example – is culled\, with varying degrees of legality\, from previously recorded or written material. It also fails to recognize that some cover bands please crowds by combining accessible material with top-notch musicianship\, including improvisation within cover songs. The members of the local band Southbound\, who play tunes by the Grateful Dead\, Allman Brothers\, Doors and others\, aren’t exactly losing sleep over the cover band label. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM to give you time to find your seats\, visit our historic lobby\, concession stand and fully stocked bar! Show begins at approximately 7:30 PM.
